Listed Barn Extension, Cornwall
A striking contemporary two-storey extension, inspired by the terrain, to a listed barn conversion overlooking the north Cornish coast, set within an AONB, as well as the extensive refurbishment of the existing barn, celebrating its historic character while introducing striking contemporary design elements.
The planning consented scheme responds to the site’s dramatic coastal setting, with the design subtly integrating into the surrounding landscape. The ground floor extensions have been carefully conceived to become part of the terrain with a meadow-like green roof and natural local materials to complement the barn’s rustic stonework. In contrast, the first-floor addition takes on a bold sculptural weathered corten steel form, that echoes the rugged tones of the coastal environment.
Our design approach has been driven by a desire to respect and celebrate the heritage of the listed barn while introducing a contemporary intervention that enhances the experience of its unique coastal setting. The corten-clad extension will appear as a dynamic piece of art in the landscape, evolving over time with a beautiful patina.
The existing barn conversion will undergo extensive refurbishment, with the preservation and accentuation of its historic fabric a central focus. Original stone walls will be carefully repaired using traditional methods and materials, while timber elements will be restored to their former character. Internally, the barn’s lofty spaces and exposed beams will be retained and celebrated, maintaining the building’s rural charm.
The new ground floor extensions employ locally sourced Cornish slate to assimilate with the surroundings. Large areas of glazing will frame views of the coastline, while the green roof design will further embed the extension into the landscape, encouraging biodiversity and minimising the visual impact from the south and west aspects.
The first-floor corten steel addition introduces a bold architectural statement. Its sculptural form, with subtle angles and crisp lines, has been carefully positioned to minimise disruption to the barn’s historic silhouette. The new bedroom within this elevated volume will offer breathtaking views of the dramatic Cornish coastline, creating an immersive experience within the landscape.
The works include significantly upgrading the thermal performance and energy efficiency of the dwelling, including moving from the existing oil based heating system for electric and heat pumps. The extension will be constructed using predominantly locally sourced and reused materials where possible. The biosolar green roofs will contribute to insulation and biodiversity.
Every design decision has been considered through the lens of sustainability and respect for the site’s heritage. This project exemplifies how contemporary architecture can respond thoughtfully to sensitive landscapes, enhancing both the built environment and the natural world.
Greenaway Architecture’s approach involved detailed research into the history and character of the barn and local area, ensuring the proposals honour its agricultural past while securing its future as a modern family home.
